An anniversary for El Salvador's national football team

On June 7, El Salvador's national football (soccer) team will play its first match in the 2007 Gold Cup tournament with a match against Trinidad & Tobago in Los Angeles. This international competition comes days before the anniversary of an important date in the history of Salvadoran soccer. June 15, 2007, will be the 25th anniversary of the one and only goal scored by a Salvadoran team in World Cup competition. (Unfortunately it came in the midst of a 10-1 loss to Hungary). The goal was scored by Luis Ramírez Zapata. A documentary titled Uno: The Story of a Goal has been produced to tell the tale of the 1982 team and that historic goal, and there is an interesting accompanying website. UPDATE El Salvador won its first Gold Cup match against Trinidad & Tobago, 2-1.

The past teams from El Salvador have always been a collection of individuals who refuse to play as a team. Passing the ball to someone in the open for a chance of a goal was not important as trying to show off individual skills. And the keeper always won and no goals were scored. Let's hope they play as a team. Maybe they will win.

One goal is nothing to be proud of. So many kids play soccer in ES more than any other sport yet in these recent years Cuba and Panama have had better results. And they play baseball for christ sakes. I hope we can play top tier soccer for these World Cup qualifiers.

Just finished watching El Salvador's first game and I have to say they did much better than I expected. I sure hope they keep up the intensity for the rest of the games...but for now I am just enjoying the moment. Go El Salvador!
