Homicides down slightly in first half of 2007

Hopefully it's a sign of future improvements. The homicide rate in El Salvador has declined over the first six months of 2007 in comparison to the same time period in 2006. According to statistics released by the government, there were 1743 murders through June 2007, compared with 1878 the prior year. That level is still way too high, but maybe it is the start of El Salvador turning the corner on its murder problem.

Maybe the murder numbers have gone even higher, and they are manipulating the statistics, so we'll never know the truth.

In the canton where I work, El Zaite, outside of Zaragoza, things have calmed down because most of the gangsters have literally killed each other. About five years ago they called Zaite the "colonia de muerte" but now it's quite safe with very little violent crime. Many, although certainly not all, of these murders, are young men killing each other in turf battles between MS-13 y la mara 18.

This probably doesn't represent a national trend, but it explains the decline in violence in one small part of E.S,

That doesn't seem true, because what happened July 21, 2007 gives me a thought that murder numbers are still growing. My father got a call that about 6 people or more have been randomly killed for no reason in a small town in Salvador. My family knows those that were killed, one of them was just 19 years old. No one knows the reason behind this mass murder.
It just happened last night and my family is really worried whats going on...
